The Media Says...
One's perception of self is not just compelled from the mirror reflection, but from external environmental factors such as the media. "One tends to internalize into one's bodily self-concept the reactions and expectations of others which are communicated through interpersonal feedback, through the media, or through cultural attitudes. The integration and interpretation of this information affects one's body image, one's body ideal, and one's level of satisfaction with one's body" (Phillips & Anton 172).
As we have learned in class, the media plays a vital part in the how society perceives the word "attractive. " People are constantly attacked with products, images, and songs that illustrate what it is to be attractive. The media has socialized us to view these celebrities and movie stars as beautiful.
AND...
We also see negative attitudes towards overweight or obesese indivualds.This bias is also convenyed by the media and is prevalent in our children, hiring practices,and everyday society. Those who may not fit in may feel less satisfaction with his or her body.
